Want a touch of Spring? Visit Alaska’s Glacier Bay

That’s right. At least, according to USA Today.

Keith Bellows, editor in chief of National Geographic Traveler and author of National Geographic’s Guide to the National Parks, gave USA TODAY’s Rebecca Heslin his foolproof destinations to enjoy the best of the new spring season.

Of the 10 destinations listed, Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve might not be on anyone’s radar, due to the thought of icy glaciers. However, May brings the sunniest days and you can cruise by no fewer than nine calving glaciers in the bay, home to humpback whales, moose, and black and brown bears. May is also the start of the Alaska cruise season, when ships are typically least full.

The only way to explore Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve is via boat or float plane. And the best way to visit the park is via a small ship, which allows you to obtain up-close, intimate and unique experiences with the land & wildlife. I haven’t heard of anyone who’s seen a bear from one of those large ships, speeding off to the next port for shopping. Yet, it’s a frequent occurrence aboard a small ship.
