Rumor Mill: Quark Expeditions to Bypass the Drake Passage

As rumored/announced on the blog Pole to Pole,

“Quark Expeditions is teaming up with another travel provider based in Punta Arenas, Chile, that also operates tours in the Antarctic. It seems they plan to offer trips to the continent that bypass a sea-transit of the Drake Passage by flying instead to King George Island in the South Shetlands, where they will then board an expedition ship for a week-long cruise of the inter coastal waters of the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands.”

If this rumor becomes reality, this would mean avoiding a portion of the Antarctic cruise that many passengers remarkas being the roughest part of the trip.
