American Safari Cruises, along with sister company InnerSea Discoveries has again expanded, purchasing two additional ships from the now defunct Cruise West cruise line.
The former Spirit of Discovery, will become InnerSea Discoveries’s “Wilderness Explorer,” sailing adventure cruises between Juneau and Sitka, beginning in summer 2012. Itineraries will include three days spent exploring Glacier Bay National Park, Icy Strait, Chichagof Island, and Peril Strait. The ship will also offer two-week cruises between Seattle and Juneau (and reverse) during the shoulder season (May / August).
The former Spirit of ’98, which will become American Safari’s Safari Legacy, will sail similar Alaska Inside Passage itinerary as it did for Cruise West, possibly as soon as 2013.
Both ships will undergo extensive renovations, which will lower their passenger capacity and add more upscale decor and amenities, plus more exploratory features, such as hot tubs, sauna and exercise equipment, and a new swim step and kayak launch platform will be added.
We’ll post further details as they are available.
