Alaska History

Map of Alaska

1861 – Gold on the Stikine River

Trader Buck Coquette of the Hudson Bay Company found gold in the river and name the claim “Buck’s Bar” after himself. News of the fine spreads and by 1862, Captain William Moore began bringing miners up river on The Flying Dutchman,” the first steamboat on the Stikine River.

Seward’s Folly

Congressional opponents of the 1867 Alaska Purchase criticised Secretary Seward, believing the land to be a largely useless ice box and the move was dubbed “Seward’s Folly.” The decision ultimately proved worthwhile when gold was discovered in the Yukon Territory in 1896.

John Muir, Explorer

John MuirNaturalist and Explorer John Muir made his first two lengthy voyages to Alaska in 1879 and in 1880, seeking glaciers, adventures, and spiritual enrichment.

October 1879 – John Muir Discovers Glacier Bay

Margerie Glacier

In canoes, Muir and his Tlingit guides paddled toward a bay of ice that had not been shown on George Vancouver’s maps from nearly a century earlier. They were the first explorers to gaze upon Glacier Bay, a site which prompted Muir to write “the treasures we had gained in the glorious morning would enriched our lives forever.

To the lover of pure wilderness, Alaska is one of the most wonderful countries in the world. — John Muir, Travels in Alaska

1887

Guided by First Nations Explorer Skookum Jim, William Moore Traverse the White Pass route that became a critical passage during the Klondike Gold Rush 9 years later.

1896

The route to the Klondike gold fields was originally only accessible on foot. As people descended on the region, the Northwest Mounted Police would not permit anyone through the Chilkoot or White Pass without a year’s worth of supplies, which typically weighed about 1,000 lbs.

1898 – The Railroad Rush

The White Pass & Yukon Route were constructed to transport prospectors and their gear through these often treacherous areas.

Captain William Moore

In addition to the Flying Dutchman, Captain Moore built the JW Moore to shuttle prospectors along the Stikine River during the Gold Rush. With these two steamboats, Moore enjoyed a monopoly on the river in charged $100 a ton for freight, $20 per man, and 5 cents per pound for baggage.

Present day

Over the last 30 years, tourism has breathed new life into the White Pass & Yukon Route, transporting thousands of people through the picturesque landscapes of the Klondike region.
